Lost when HMS Formidable was torpedoed and sunk off Start Point, Devon, on January 1st, 1915.

John was born in Hartlepool on June 23rd, 1879, the son of Patrick Kelly, a brick-layer’s labourer from Mayo, Ireland, and Mary Missett (or possibly Catherine Missett), from Sligo, Ireland. The couple had married in Hartlepool in 1860. 

The 1881 Census shows the family are living in Silver Street, Hartlepool, but by 1891 have moved to Eston, Yorkshire. 

The 1911 Census lists John as a lodger living at 34, South Street, West Hartlepool and his occupation is a labourer.
