George Arthur Michael Lucas was born in West Hartlepool on the 19th May 1899 the oldest of 6 children to Arthur Lucas and his wife Annie both natives of West Hartlepool who had married in the town in 1898. Arthur was a shipyard labourer and the son of George Lucas who was a boot and shoe maker originally from Leeds and his Scottish wife Catherine.

In 1911, the family were living in Sunderland Street West Hartlepool, father Arthur was a shipyard labourer and young George Arthur was a scholar.

George must have joined the Royal Navy when barely 15 years of age and was on board HM Ganges, a Royal Navy training ship. It appears that he sadly lost hislife through illness and was buried in Shotley Churchyard near Harwich in Suffolk.
