The steamship Springhill sank on August 24th, 1917, after striking a mine laid by the German submarine UB-21, 4 miles north-east of Scarborough. The ship was on a voyage from Hartlepool to London with a cargo of coal.
Four crew were lost including West Hartlepool-born George Albert Welch. The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Ahmad Masil; Shephard, George William; Young, Christopher James.
