Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, Monday, February 22nd, 1897:
WEST HARTLEPOOL STEAMER LOST. Advices from Kingston, Jamaica, state that the British steamer May foundered in the Caribbean Sea the 5th inst. She struck the bar off the harbour of Barranquilla, Colombia, but refloated, and later storms were encountered, in which she was so badly damaged that she sank. The crew took to the boats, and were rescued by the barque Glen Giani. The May was built by Messrs. Priestman and Co., Sunderland, in 1890. Messrs. J.E. Guthe and Co., West Hartlepool, are the managing owners.
