Alethea - a brief history

Built: 1872 by Withy Alexander & Co., Hartlepool. Yard No 30. Launched on Saturday 24th May 1872 by Mrs Jobson. Official No. 58764: Code Letters LFDB: Code Letters JHDK: well-deck iron screw;  repairs to damage 1875 & 1876.

Owners: 1872 ES Jobson & Co, West Hartlepool: 1878 George Horsley & Co, West Hartlepool: 1897 Angf Aktieb Gustav Bogel (H Andersson) Stromstad, Sweden–renamed Gustav Bogel.

Masters: 1872-77 H Powell: 1877-81 M Peacock: 1882-83 JL Baxter: 1883-89 Donovan: 1891 Crane: 1892-97 R Lord: 1898-1902 O Pettersson: 1904 NP Christiansson: 1906-10 SP Jonasson.

Originally cylinders were 29.5" & 59" bores by 36" stroke operating at 65psi, but were later modified to 27.5" & 59" bores by 36" stroke operating at 80psi.

5th January 1877 E.S.Jobson dies, his 2 remaining shares go to George Horsley who then transfers one to Matthew Henry Horsley(clerk).
4th July 1877 George Horsley appointed managing owner.
20th February 1889 George Horsley & Matthew Henry Horsley jointly appointed managing owners.
27th April 1897 sold to Robert Jobson, ship broker of Hartlepool, at the time of the sale Matthew Henry Horsley owned 57 of the 64 shares.
8th May 1897 sold to Actieselskabet "Gustav Bogel"(H.Andersson) & renamed Gustav Bogel, registered in Stroemstad, Sweden with O. Petterson as Master.
Gustav Bogel arrived for breaking at Boulogne 2nd quarter 1910

George Horsley's wife was named Alethea Ann Horsley.
