The following is an extract from a short article by Bert Spaldin which appeared in the November 1990, No. 104 issue of the ‘Tees Packet’:
On the 27th September, 1890, Miss Jennie Wood christened the well deck steamer Ipsden, when she was launched from William Gray’s shipyard. She was built for John Wood & Co., West Hartlepool (and Swansea), and John’s brother James managed her at this time. She ran trials on November 1st and was ready to be handed over by the 3rd. Her certificate of Registry was issued on November 6th, with John Wood holding all 64 shares.
