At a cost of £74,326, Rift House Shopping Centre opened in Catcote Road close to the junction with Oxford Road. There was a range of shops, VG and Thompson supermarkets, Hughes fish and chip shop, Gillen's newsagents, Sparks bakers and Edna Jones wools,women's and baby clothes. Today there are more takeaway shops, but Edna Jones' shop remains.
The shopping parade was extended when the nearby CalciPte, later Shakespeare, public house was demolished.
