This view will have been taken around 1954 from the upper floors of the Northern Daily Mail Offices looking down on the band passing the old library building.

The car park which is at the bottom right became part of the site of the new mail office which closed just a few years ago.

Shops visible in Church Square are Zip Cleaners and Atkinson's menswear.

Possibly taken from the Northern Daily Mail Office, the image shows the Central Library in 1946 complete with patient dog presumably waiting for its owner !

The image has been taken of an empty space which was soon to be furnished as the reference library. This suggests that the photo was taken around 1896.

1902  A note of the back of photo says that it was to celebrate single to double tram line conversion. On the left are the municipal buildings and old central library, the clock tower of Gray Peverell (later Binns and Wilkinsons) is on the right and the man in the centre is probably transport manager or inspector. Trams from all corners and people appear to be conveniently posed !
