More detail »A rare photo of Haswell House in Stockton Road. The house was originally built and named Jackson's Lodge by Ralph Ward Jackson. He built it for John Pile,the shipbuilder, to entice him to the new town of West Hartlepool. When Pile left the town, it became the home of Thomas Furness, businessman and brother of Sir Christopher Furness the shipbuilder, who renamed it Haswell House after the maiden name of his wife. In 1905 it became the family home of the Willson family and they were the last occupants.
In 1931 it was sold to be demolished and Haswell Avenue and Whitfield Drive now occupy the site.

More detail »Power's was actually two shops on the corner of Spring Garden Road, Stratford Road and Stockton Road. Both are now converted to houses and this image was taken in 1963.
To the right is the Co-op and this is now Blue Cow butchers. The Co-op is now to the right of the old premises which was then Walter Willson's.

More detail »For many years Rogers' Confectioner & Tobacconist's shop was at the corner of Oxford Street and Stockton Road. The shop itself says Oxford Corner. There is a Travel Agency sign in the left hand window of the shop and on the pavement outside is a sign advertising 'Bee Line Excursions'. The Bee Line garage was in Oxford Road almost diagonally opposite the shop. On the right hand side of the photo is Oxford Street School.

Ewart Parson's garage roof is to the right and a corporation bus can be seen coming out of the part of Stockton Road which runs through Foggy Furze. The Travellers' Rest is just out of sight on the left.
Today there are traffic lights at this junction.

The houses on the right had been recently built and later on the left would be Rossmere Park. The NDM reported that the road which had once cut through fields was beginning to look suburban. One car is on the road !

More detail »A rare picture of Westbourne Methodist Church showing the front of the original building without the current group of mature Trees.
The picture is undated but prominent are the trolley bus posts and the houses at the bottom of Westmoreland Street are private homes and not shops as they were later to become. The prominent poster at the Church entrance cannot be read.
The buildings of the building business on the extreme right are now used by a garage business.
