Cossipore sailed from Liverpool on 31 December 1869 bound for Calcutta with a cargo of salt & a crew of 28. She was struck by heavy gales & foundered about 30 miles south of Kinsale Head on 8 January 1870. Nine of the crew managed to get into one of the boats & away from the vessel but the remainder had no time to launch the second boat & went down with the ship. The master, carpenter & two seamen climbed onto a piece of wreck but all except for one seaman were later washed off & drowned. The seaman, Alfred Holstein, after about 48 hours clinging to wreckage, was rescued by the West African Mail steamer, Bonny. Those in the lifeboat were picked up by the Navarre & landed at Falmouth. Eighteen lives were lost.
The master of the Bonny, Lowry, & the 2nd officer, James Sullivan, both received presentations for gallant conduct in their part in the rescue.
