The British steamship Eloby was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-38 (Max Valentiner), 75 miles south-east of Malta, on July 19th, 1917. The vessel was carrying troops of the French 1st Regiment d'Artillerie de Montagne (Mountain Artillery). The exact number of lives lost is not known, however, it is belived 56 crewmen and at least 100 French soldiers were lost. Master William Wright.
