The steamship Ashmore sank after striking a mine laid by UC-3, 5 miles east of the Kentish Knock Light Vessel on September 12th, 1915. The ship was on a voyage from Rosario, Argentina, to Rotterdam with a cargo of maize.
Four of the crew were lost, including Joseph Ernest Hutton, of West Hartlepool.
The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Buchanan, Duncan; Cooper, Frank; Smith, Thomas.
