Independence - a general history

Masters: 1839 Compton; 1841 J Hill; 1842 Johnson Keal; April 1846-48 John Barton; November 1848 Joseph Barton; April 1849 George Giletson; August 1849 James Alder; 1850 J Minto; February 1852 William Crawford; December 1852 George Irvine.

Voyages: 1839 Hartlepool for Portsmouth; 30 January 1842 from Liverpool for New York: from Hartlepool for Boulogne she went ashore on the Brake on 13 January 1849; She came off but was leaky & had to run onshore at the Main & discharge 30 tons of coal before she could be got off & taken to Ramsgate for repair; 1850 Hartlepool for Oporto; from Belfast for New York on 23 December 1851 she went ashore during a snow storm on Jersey Beach near Shark River inlet. Her salted cargo was lost but she was re-floated.

Independence was abandoned at sea during a fierce gale which swept the British coast on 26 & 27 December 1852. She was lost at the same time as Thomas Wood. The crew of both vessels were all landed at Shields.
