Botassis - a general history

Completed May 1859; Official No. 27208; Code Letters PQHT.

Owners: Greek & Oriental Steam Navigation Co (Stefanos Xenos) London; 1864 GB Carr & Co, London.

In August 1864 the Botassis & the Tzamados were in the Danube to proceed for Ibrala to load a cargo of petroleum oil for London. On reaching Ibrala it was found that the depot holding the cargo had been destroyed by fire. It was agreed that the vessels should carry any other cargo that could be procured to earn them the same amount. They only managed to take on a cargo of 300 tons of barley each which was well below what would have been earned on the petroleum. The owners, Carr & Co, took an action against the Wallachian Petroleum Co Ltd to recover the difference.

Bound for London from Corfu in March 1865 the Bottasis was to touch at Malta for coal but was totally lost near Reggio. All crew were saved except for the engineer.
