Darien - a general history

On 14 November 1874 there was an outbreak of fire in the cargo whilst Darien was in the Missippi River. The inquiry found there was no evidence to show how or by whom the fire was caused. The court was of the opinion that there was not such prudence & supervision in the engineers department as the peculiar loading of the ship appeared to demand: shestranded on the Causeway Shoal, Cardigan Bay on 18 December 1875. The master was found gravely in default in the navigation of his vessel & his certificate was suspended for six months.

Darien was anchored in the roads at Riposto when she broke free from her moorings during a gale & after stranding on the coast she parted amidships on 16 January 1885.
