Taken not long after the school opened, the girls are playing on grass tennis courts on the Elwick Road side of the school where Eldon Grove Nursery yard now stands.
In the background are the Victorian houses in Belmont Gardens and behind them Eamont Gardens. There are significant gaps at the Elwick Road end of Belmont Gardens as a long terrace of houses on the west side would be built after the photo was taken.
The house on the far right is the old caretaker's house for Elwick Road School which is still there as a private residence next to the car park for Elwick Grange Care Home. This car park was originally Elwick Road School playground.

West Hartlepool High School for Girls, Eldon Grove, Hartlepool, opened in 1912.
Prior to this, there was a grammar school department for boys and girls in the Technical School in Lauder Street. When Hartlepool schools adopted the comprehensive system in 1973, the High School buildings were used as part of Brinkburn Comprehensive School. In the late 1980s, the building was demolished and Eldon Grove Academy (a primary school) opened on the site in 1989.
