West Hartlepool High School for Girls, Eldon Grove, Hartlepool, opened in 1912.
Prior to this, there was a grammar school department for boys and girls in the Technical School in Lauder Street. When Hartlepool schools adopted the comprehensive system in 1973, the High School buildings were used as part of Brinkburn Comprehensive School. In the late 1980s, the building was demolished and Eldon Grove Academy (a primary school) opened on the site in 1989.
For more detailed history and a growing archive about the school, please see the dedicated website www.hhsfg.com
Examples of the type of information available can be seen below.
Taken in June 1957, the names on reverse are Jean Kay, Maureen Auton, Pat Clayton and Jean Nichol but order unclear.
The site is now the Nursery area of Eldon Grove Academy.

More detail »The art room was, until a new one was built in a large extension in 1962, at the rear of the school. It changed little over the years.
More detail »Probably taken just after the school opening in 1912, the image is one of a set of postcards and shows girls in the Cookery Room. Although the equipment changed greatly, this same room was used for 'domestic science' at least until the school became part of Brinkburn Comprehensive School.
More detail »Taken not long after the school opened, the girls are playing on grass tennis courts on the Elwick Road side of the school where Eldon Grove Nursery yard now stands.
In the background are the Victorian houses in Belmont Gardens and behind them Eamont Gardens. There are significant gaps at the Elwick Road end of Belmont Gardens as a long terrace of houses on the west side would be built after the photo was taken.
The house on the far right is the old caretaker's house for Elwick Road School which is still there as a private residence next to the car park for Elwick Grange Care Home. This car park was originally Elwick Road School playground.

More detail »Taken around 1913 just after the school opened, it is most likely that this field is on the Elwick Road side of the school.
On the far left, Elwick Road School can be seen on the end of Belmont Gardens. The fence across the centre is Eldon Grove we believe and none of the houses at that end of the grove have been built. The trees are on Elwick Road and are on a map of the time. The bungalow on the right we believe to be the lodge for Claremont House (Claremont was later a school, then demolished and sheltered flats built. It is now a new development of retirement homes) This bungalow could perhaps have been the lodge for Brinkburn when that was a private house, as there was apparently a long drive to the house originally from Elwick Road.
This lodge is still there today, close to the entrance to the Burn Valley near Eldon Grove although it is covered by trees.
The field where the girls are playing are probably where Eldon Grove Bowls and Tennis Club is now as maps of 1919 show fields on the site of the Club.
More detail »Probably circa late 1930s, the photograph is taken from Elwick Road looking across the tennis court at the school. The house on the left is in Eldon Grove. The field area is now the nursery playground for Eldon Grove Primary School.
More detail »Taken from the same place as one in 1968 of a group of girls. In 1961, a large new wing of the school was built out from the left side of the building.
More detail »The image shows PT lesson or drill in the High School Hall which was little changed until demolished. The hall had classrooms of it and a balcony around three sides with further classrooms which were science labs.
The double doors by 1957 led to a wing containing a large gym, library and admin area.
THe photo was taken not long after the school opened in 1912.

These house captain badges were probably pre 1950s but someone may know otherwise. The badge for Beale house is missing from the collection.

More detail »The photograph was taken in Belmont Gardens in September 1961. Elizabeth Aisbitt (left) and Carole Forster (right) were about to start West Hartlepool High School for the first time. However instead of just walking round the corner, they had to travel to Jesmond Road School as in 1961 the High School was being extended and renovated and 1st years used empty rooms at the primary school.
Uniform was very strict, the dark blue gaberdine mac and all skirts a regulation length, grey knee length socks, black lace up shoes with at least 6 lace holes, satchel on both shoulders please and of course the 'pork pie' hat to be worn at all times in the street !
More detail »Taken in 1922 at West Hartlepool High School for Girls, the girls appear to be studying plants. There is a microscope on the desk at the front.
