 Claremont School
Claremont SchoolChildren with learning difficulties (or as the awful terminology at the time said 'mentally deficient') were taught in the disused cookery school at Ward Jackson School from 1902 and were moved in 1933 to Claremont, an old Victorian house. In 1966, a purpose built school, Southbrooke, was opened in Catcote Road.
Claremont became the first Teachers' Centre in 1969 and was replacedfor a number of years by Hollymount in Wooler Road. The site of Claremont now has new homes for over 50s on it. Sheltered flats were built there in the 1970s after the large house was demolished, but these in turn were pulled down early this century.
