Children with learning difficulties (or as the awful terminology at the time said 'mentally deficient') were taught in the disused cookery school at Ward Jackson School from 1902 and were moved in 1933 to Claremont, an old Victorian house. In 1966, a purpose built school, Southbrooke, was opened in Catcote Road.
Claremont became the first Teachers' Centre in 1969 and was replacedfor a number of years by Hollymount in Wooler Road. The site of Claremont now has new homes for over 50s on it. Sheltered flats were built there in the 1970s after the large house was demolished, but these in turn were pulled down early this century.
The photo shows Lily Jenkins in the Burn Valley beside the 'Peter Pan pond' . This was filled in some years ago and an adventure playground has been built where it was. The statue of Peter Pan was often stolen and replaced. In the background is Claremont, a Victorian villa which, after being a private home, was first a special school for children with learning needs and before being demolished was Hartlepool Teachers' Centre. Sheltered housing was then built on the site but this is now demolished and recently a retirement development is in its place.

More detail »Taken around 1913 just after the school opened, it is most likely that this field is on the Elwick Road side of the school.
On the far left, Elwick Road School can be seen on the end of Belmont Gardens. The fence across the centre is Eldon Grove we believe and none of the houses at that end of the grove have been built. The trees are on Elwick Road and are on a map of the time. The bungalow on the right we believe to be the lodge for Claremont House (Claremont was later a school, then demolished and sheltered flats built. It is now a new development of retirement homes) This bungalow could perhaps have been the lodge for Brinkburn when that was a private house, as there was apparently a long drive to the house originally from Elwick Road.
This lodge is still there today, close to the entrance to the Burn Valley near Eldon Grove although it is covered by trees.
The field where the girls are playing are probably where Eldon Grove Bowls and Tennis Club is now as maps of 1919 show fields on the site of the Club.
