This school opened in 1960.

It is 25 years since Grange Infants' first opened its doors that wonderful May in 1960.They were halcyon days and we were in an annexe building as the main school was not quite ready. There were fields all around us as neither Manor School nor the Fens Estate had been built. We used the field where Manor now stands for reading lessons and story times on those lovely sunny days.
There were three teachers, myself, Mollie Dodds and Joyce Walton and Frieda Robinson ( later Coward) the headteacher. On Commonwealth Day that year we hauled the piano outside while Joyce played the children sang and danced with their Union Jacks. The school had the lovely atmosphere of a village school.
Only a dozen children syed for lunch which was eaten in Mollie's room and assembly was in Joyce's room because of the piano. Frieda and I had come from the old Ward Jackson School so it was wonderful to be in a new school with its character and traditions to be made.
In September 1960 we moved into the present school but as the Junior school was not ready , we had to share the building which meant 70 children packed into one room. Our halcyon days were over !
As Owton Manor grew so did the school numbers and at one time we had 500 infants and 60 in a class!
We worked hard but I will remember my days at Grange with affection.
Elsie Stevenson
(Mrs Stevenson was a much loved teacher who lived until she was 101 I believe and was still doing supply work in her 70s) F.Wilson
More detail »This photo is probably a sports day in about 1962. It is interesting to note that there is no Manor School or Fens Estate visible in the background. Possibly behind the trees is Owton Manor Farm which still stands to the east of Manor School.
More detail »On the first day of the 1998 summer holiday, a massive fire completely destroyed the Junior classrooms and hall and they had to be demolished. The new building in Owton Manor Lane is built onto the 1960 Infants' School which survived the fire.
More detail »School opening in 1960 . On the left is Alderman Hogg. The mayor was Mr Coxon and to the right is MP for the Hartlepools Commander Kerans RN who opened the school.
The Mail reported that Grange was the first of its kind in England and that to children who began their education at Newburn or Ward Jackson it was 'paradise'.
More detail »Smartly dressed mums (or teachers?)and children gathered at the school gate of the now demolished Junior entrance to the school. This looks to be when the school was very new as trees have just been planted. The image shows the school hall windows to the left of the entrance. All of this part of the school to the right of the chimney was destroyed by fire in 1998 and has been rebuilt, the Nursery now being on this same site.

More detail »Taken probably in the early 1970s, the photo is in front of the main building and the teacher standing is possibly Mr Kaylow. On the far right is Mr Peacock with a pipe and Miss Robinson next to him.
More detail »In the 1960s as the population of Owton Manor grew, temperory classrooms were built. At one time there were three annexe buildings and this shows the one closest to Maxwell Road being built. In the distance are the fields where Kesteven Road was later built.
More detail »Taken in the early 1960s, the Beeline bus sign says Torquay but it is an unlikely destination for so many buses from a school. The headmaster, Sid Rawlings can be seen surrounded by female staff wearing their 'pac a macs' which were a must in the 1960s on potentially rainy school trips ! The teacher looking towards the camera is Miss Lilian Watchman. Probably a trip to the Roman Wall indicated on another photo.

More detail »Taken in the early 1960s at Grange Infants' School, the children enjoy their mid morning milk. School milk, many will remember was often frozen in winter and put beside the radiators to thaw or was warm and quite unpleasant in summer !This classroom became the original nursery in 1974 and is now a community room.

More detail »The image shows Grange Junior children outside the school in Owton Manor Lane obviously going on a residential visit perhaps to Carlton or to Belgium which the school did in the early days. As the grass verges appear not to be planted, the image will be from the early 1960s.
