Fate

The West Hartlepool-built steamship Windermere was sunk by the German submarine U-35, (Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere), 58 miles south-west of Port Mahon, Minorca, on June 27th, 1916. The ship was on a voyage from the Tyne to Savona, with a cargo of coal.

Twelve crew were lost including three from the Hartlepools:
T.R. Brown
R. Kruse
James Frederick Watson.

The other crewmen who lost their lives were:
Baxter, W.J.; Creenan, J.; Molder, Ivan; Nilsson, Ivar; Sanckey, S.; Savage, George John; Schulz, Robert Conrad; Williams, Melville Edward; Wilson, J.
