More detail »This is probably the German registered, HALMSTAD (814grt/1909), at the bottom end of the Union Dock quay, just before the swing bridge on Middleton Road. The funnels of two of the port’s steam tugs are visible between the ships and the dockside cranes. Four vessels in the ‘Mothball’ fleet are to the right of the picture. They could be:- AVON VALE,(D); BLANKNEY,(D); TALYBONT,(D); HAYDON,(D).

More detail »German flag vessel “Kathe Ahrens” was the mainstay of the weekly service in the 60s and 70s and is shown with timber discharged during her visit on 12th March, 1973 on “A” Jetty, Union Dock.

The Mail photographer has also captured the stem of the “Highland” loading a bulk cargo from “B” Jetty possibly coal, whilst in the back ground can be seen the m.v. “Wilhelm Koerts”, she was chartered to carry the over bookings of cargo for the “Kathe Ahrens”, that featured the trade at this time which was boosted by the policies of the Heath/Chancellor Barber Government.

To avoid disruption in the work place, one Stockton company bought its own generator from Sweden which the Mail photographer took the pic in the course of his work. It being an unusual item to be snapped (and on a local coal merchants wagon, the road haulage industry was also booming at this time)!

More detail »Whilst discharging cargo in Hartlepool in June of 1972, the m.v. “Norse Viking” needed a generator replacing. This was brought from Gothenburg on the “Kathe Ahrens” and staff from H Q Engineering opened the side of the “Norse Viking”s Engine room to enable the new generator to be slid aboard and get the vessel back to sea as soon as her cargo was discharged.
