Joseph Ernest Hutton was born in Coatham, Redcar. His birth was registered in the Guisborough distict March qtr. 1885 and he was baptised at Coatham on the 5th April 1885. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Anne (nee Bradley) Hutton who had married at Christ Church ,Coatham on the 17th May 1875. Joseph was a labourer at the time of Joseph Ernest Hutton’s baptism..

 In 1891 the family were living at Marsh House, Kirkleatham and Joseph Hutton was a Farmer.

 In 1901 the family had moved to 83 Lynn Street (a Public House), West Hartlepool and Joseph Hutton was an Innkeeper (Pub)Also in the household were Joseph’s wife Mary Anne, son Joseph and daughters Clarice and Vera.

 In 1911 Joseph Ernest Hutton. Mary Ann is shown as a Publican and her husband Joseph, daughter’s Eva and Clarice (now married and called Clarice Starling) are assisting in the business. Also in the household is Sidney Starling who is a Railway Clerk and Joseph and Mary Anne’s son-in-law.

 Joseph Ernest Hutton married Rosa Emily Ward in the June qtr. 1907 in Hartlepool .

 In 1911 Joseph Ernest Hutton was living at 22 Bertha Street, West Hartlepool,and was a carter for a Mineral Water Manufacturer.

His wife Rosa Emily stated she had been married 4 years and had one child, living. Rosa was born St. James, West Hartlepool. Their child was a daughter,Vera May, aged 8 months, born St. James, West Hartlepool .Also in the house was Albert Ward, Joseph’s brother-in-law, aged 19, single and a Ships’ Chandler’s Assistant, born St. James, West Hartlepool.

 The deaths at sea records show Joseph Hutton, age 31, a Donkeyman, born Redcar, address 6 Freville Street, West Hartlepool. Joseph died off Kentish Knock when SS Ashmore was sunk by enemy action on 12th September 1915.
