North-East England has a well-deserved reputation as a particularly dangerous stretch of coast. Violent storms, wartime losses and of course human error, have all contributed to the enormous number of ships and boats known to have been lost here, many within sight of safety at Hartlepool.
This section contains a selection of information, photographs and memories of Hartlepool's long tradition of saving life from shipwrecks and the sea. We would like to add to this section: if you have any relevant material that you would be willing to share, please get in touch with us at infodesk@hartlepool.gov.uk
