James Sparke was born in November 1891 in Hartlepool and was baptised on the 13th December 1891 at Holy Trinity Church , Hartlepool . James was the son of Charles John Sparke and Agnes (nee Buckle) Sparke who had married in 1888 in Teesdale Registration District (probably Barnard Castle ). Charles was born in Allendale, Northumberland and Agnes in Barnard Castle , County Durham .

 

In 1901 Charles and Agnes are living at 65 Frederic Street , Throston, Hartlepool and Charles is a Grocer. There are children Madge (Marjorie) 11, born Barnard Castle , James 9, Charles 7, and William 5 all born Hartlepool .

 

In 1911 the family are still at 65 Frederic Street with the addition of one more child, Mary Bonas,7,born Hartlepool . James and his brother Charles Bertie are both Marine Enginers.

 

The 1895 School Admissions Register for Hartlepool Throston Board Infant (Boys) School shows James was admitted in May 1895 and born in November 1891. His father Charles John, a Grocer.

James was killed when SS Canonesa was hit by a submarine and his name is on the Tower Hill Memorial.

 

The Probate record shows: James Sparke of 49 Thornton Street, West Hartlepool died 1st May 1918 at Worthing Hospital , Worthing , killed in war. Admistration with Will, Durham 25th June 1918, to Agnes (wife of Charles John Sparke). Effects £342 17s 2d. The War Graves Commission records show 45 Thornton Street .

 

The Sparke family had already suffered the loss of a son the previous year in 1917. SEE Charles Bertie Sparke who died on the SS Wathfield on 21st February 1917.
