Lost on the steamship Franz Fischer. Son of William and Mary Charlton. William seems to have died quite early in Alberts life; the 1901 Census records Mary as the Head of the household, living at No.25, Hilda Street, West Hartlepool, with married daughter Clara Sandell (Charwoman, aged 31), grand daughter Mary Sandell (aged 2), sons John (Shipyard Labourer, aged 22, single), Robert (no occupation listed, aged 20, single), Ernest (Apprentice Plater, aged 17, single), and Alfred. In 1894, Alfred was attending the West Hartlepool Exchange School (Boys).
At the age of 24, Alfred married Mary Spalding, aged 21, at St. Paul's Church, West Hartlepool, on June 6th, 1912. Bertie George and Alice Cockfield were Witnesses.
Their address at this time is listed as No.38, Albany Street, West Hartlepool, but by the time of Albert's death four years later, they were living at No.3, Albany Street.
Alfred's father, William was an Engineer, while Mary's father was listed as a Labourer.
