Roll of Honour

Carl Christian Christensen was born in Denmark on 22nd April, 1856, to parents Rasmus and Maria Christensen.
On the April 4th,  1883, Carl married Alvilde Dahlberg (born Denmark, 31^st December, 1860), at the Seaman’s Congregation, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. 

He was in the Merchant Navy and these are notes of some of his voyages:
1880 – Chs Christensen born Denmark 1856 – Fireman Vessel Etna - 27^th July 1880-7^th January 1881, previous vessel – Port Brothers

1881 – C. Christensen born Hals, Denmark 1856 – 2^nd Engineer, Vessel Minerva -3^rd June 1881-17^th July 1881, previous vessel – Staincliffe

The 1891 Census shows Carl serving aboard the steamship Regalia, then berthed at the South Dock, Sunderland. His wife and three children, Annie (aged 7), Lily (5) and Jenny (3), were living at No.24, Johnson Street, West Hartlepool. All three girls were born in West Hartlepool.

By 1901, Carl had become a Naturalised Citizen, and had taken the name Charles. He and his wife were now living in Alderson Street, with Lily (now aged 15), Jenny (13), Margaretha (9), and Marjorie (4). 

In 1911, Alvida was living at No.13, Wansbeck Gardens and only one child was with her, 19-year old Margaretha. This Census reveals that of the couple's six children, four had sadly died:
Jenny in 1922 aged 22; Marjorie in 1901 aged 6; Annie just before the 1901 Census aged 16. In the admission register of the Upper Board School, a note in 1892 says Annie was in very delicate health. The other child of the six is probably Alfred who was born and died in 1892.

The two surviving girls, Margaretha married Olive Poole and Lily married Frank Platts.

Carl Christensen was lost the steamship Manchuria in October, 1917, while on a voyage from La Goulette to Hartlepool with a cargo of iron ore. Probate was granted to his wife and his effects were given as £910.

Alvida remained at the Wansbeck Gardens house until on the 1939 register she is found living with her daughter Margaretha and her husband Oliver Poole in Cardiff, and is described as incapacitated. She died on 29th April, 1941, at Heoly-y-Bout Rhiwbina, Glamorgan, and her effects were £721.
