Hartlepool seafarers lost at sea

Thulin, Carl Ludwig

Steward
11, Warden Street, West Hartlepool
Gotenburg Sweden
1856
25/8/1917

Carl Ludwig Thulin was one of 6 men lost on the SS Nascent. The ship was hit by a torpedo from German UC49 near the Scilly Islands on a journey between Tegal and Hull. He was the son  of the late Lars and Christina Thulin and was born in Gotenburg, Sweden around 1856.

It is unclear when he came to Hartlepool, but he was married in early 1886 in the town to Jane Avery originally from Robin Hood's Bay and born around 1853.

In 1901,the couple were living in Regent's Place Stranton, Carl was a naturalised British citizen and his name was given as Charles. He was an electric tram driver. In 1911, Jane was living alone at 11 WardenSt. The 1911 census tells us that her husband was at sea and that there were no children of the marriage.
