James Chalk was lost on SS Rhineland off Suffolk on 11th Nov 1915 when she was sunk by a mine from submarine UC3 whilst travelling from the Tees to Nantes carrying steel bars.

He had been born in Hartlepool on December 12th 1858  to James Spanton Chalk and his wife Jane Corker, from Barnard Castle, who had married in Sunderland in 1855. James Spanton Chalk died soon after his son was born, and Jane  married again in 1859 in Hartlepool, her second husband being John Field.

In 1871, young James Chalk at 13 was living in Barnard Castle with his maternal grandparents John and Mary Corker.  By 1881, he was boarding in Hartlepool and was an iron moulder.

In 1891,at 32 years, he was living in Atkinson St Stockton with his by then widowed mother Jane Field. His occupation then was a plater's helper and also in the household were two stepbrothers and a stepsister born in Hartlepool, and two stepbrothers born in Norton from his mother's marriage to John Field.

In 1892, James Chalk married Sarah nee Murray, the widow of Frederick Moorhead in Middlesbrough. In 1901, he was living in Sandside Hartlepool with his wife, son John Carter Chalk aged 7 and born in Hartlepool and his stepson  11 year old William Moorhead born in Thornaby. By then James had another occupation, shipyard helper.

In 1911, he was back in Stockton with his wife, son and stepson and was a shipyard labourer, his sons both being rivetters.
