Lost on the steamship Skaraas, of London.
Fred Halbert was born at Stranton, West Hartlepool, on January 31st, 1896, to parents James (born Scotland, c.1850), and Annie Halbert (nee Jupe - born Hartlepool, c.1854), and was baptised at All Saints Church, Stranton, on February 20th, 1896. Their address at this time was No.56, Westmoreland Street, with James recorded as an Ironworker.
The 1901 Census shows the family living at No.32, Alston Street, West Hartlepool, with Fred being the youngest (aged 5), of seven children, the others being George J. (aged 20, Apprentice Coppersmith), Annie (17), Robert R. (15), Abraham Juke (12), Stephen (9), and Christina (7).
The 1911 Census shows James (now a Steelwork Foreman), Annie, George (Coppersmith), Abraham (Fitter), Stephen (Apprentice Fitter), Christina, and Fred (Surgery Boy for a local Doctor), living at No.11, Hampshire Street, West Hartlepool.
At some point Fred decided on a life at sea, and in 1915, at the age of 20, joined his first ship, the West Hartlepool-registered steamer Duart, locally owned by William Maclean & Co. (Maclean Shipping Company Ltd.).
It appears Fred did not marry, as on his death he left £143 to his then widowed mother, Annie. His address at this time is given as Waldon House, Waldon Street, West Hartlepool.
