Arthur Leonard Brown died 4th February 1918 at a very young age on S.S.Traveal where he was a Mess Room Steward.The ship had been travelling from Algiers to Barrow in Furness with a cargo of iron ore when it was sunk by submarine U53 off Anglesey North Wales.
Arthur was baptised 6th August 1903, All Saints, Stranton, the son of William and Emma Brown.
In 1911 the Browns were living at 2 Bedwas Street , Grangetown, Cardiff . Arthur’s father William Brown is 43, a Dry Dock Labourer born Lauraston, Scotland (there are a few Laurastons in Scotland with varying spelling) William’s wife Emma is 32 and born Northampton . There are six children. William George aged 10 and Arthur aged 8 born West Hartlepool, then Charlie 5, Louisa 3, Emma 1 year and 7 months and Winnie 4 months all born Cardiff, Wales.
William Brown married Emily Snape in Hartlepool in 1900. In 1901 they were living at 58 Cumberland Street, West Hartlepool . William Brown is a Shipyard Labourer, aged 33 born Scotland and Emily is 23 born Northampton . Also living with the Browns is Arthur Snape, described as brother (should strictly be brother-in-law) aged 21, a Shipyard Labourer, born Northampton .
From the 1901 and 1911 Census Emma/Emily was born c1879 in Northampton Arthur Snape her brother was on the 1881 with his parents William and Harriett Snape and a sister named Emma aged 3. Also found the baptism of both Emma and Arthur on the same day (15th January 1881) at All Saints, Northampton . So Emma was baptised as Emma but seems to have used the name Emily for her marriage and on the 1901 census.
