Lost on the steamship Wathfield, of West Hartlepool.
Matthew Smith Pallett was born at Hartlepool in 1870.
The 1881 Census records that his father, William, was an Iron Driller, born in London; his mother Sarah was born in Middlesbrough. Matthew (aged 10 at this time), had three younger brothers, Thomas (7), George (5) and James (1). Also living in the house at this time was Sarah's brother, Matthew Smith, aged 33 and listed as a Sailor.
Matthew clearly decided on a career at sea, and on May 14th, 1892, at just 22-years of age, passed his Second Mate Ceritficate, or "Ticket". Two years later, on July 10th, 1894, he received his First Mate Ticket, and on January 6th, 1896, received his Master's Ticket.
In 1895 Matthew married Fanny Leng and the 1911 Census shows Matthew and Fanny living at 'Burnside' (possibly No.140), Colwyn Road, West Hartlepool, with their three children; William Strutt (aged 11), Mary Alice (8), and Mathhew Smith (3). Also living in the house at this time is Ann Smith Pallett, listed as 'Sister'.
On his death, Matthew's Effects totalling £1,081 10s 4d, went to his widow Fanny.
