Lost on the Protected Cruiser HMS Hawke.
James Charles Frederick Gamble was born on 6th Jan 1881 in Belfast. His father Thomas, who was also born in Belfast around 1850, had married Elizabeth who was a Liverpudlian. They must have been in West Hartlepool in the early 1870s as two of their children were born there. However, James Charles and two of his brothers, according to the 1891 census, were born back in Belfast. The family then appear to have moved to Coleraine where two girls were born in the 1880s. By 1891 they were in Burbank Street, Hartlepool.
James was killed on 15th October 1914, one of over 500 men who perished on HMS Hawke in the North Sea, having by hit by a torpedo from U9. His body was not recovered and his mother, by then a widow, living at 14, Adelaide Street, West Hartlepool, was informed.
