Hartlepool seafarers lost at sea

Ernest Peacock was lost on the convoy sloop HMS Tulip (Q.12), when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, west of Ireland. His body was not recovered and he is remembered on the Chatham Memorial.
Ernest was one of at least 8 children born in West Hartlepool to Henry Peacock of Kilvington, near Thirsk, and his wife Sarah, nee Dennis. The couple had been married in Hartlepool on Nov 18th 1880. Son Ernest was the fourth son of the couple and was born in the town on 15th Dec 1889. He had two younger sisters and a further two brothers.
Ernest's father Henry had come to Hartlepool from Yorkshire as a child with his parents, Luke and Jane (nee Dixon) and Luke was a butcher.
Henry became a publican, and from 1880-1901 was with his wife and children in the George Hotel Brunswick Street. In July 1905, Sarah died followed by Henry in April 1910.
By the 1911 census, having just lost his mother,Ernest Peacock was living at 241 York Road (on the block between Elwick Road and the Burn Valley) He, and a young brother and sister were living with his sister in law Mabel and older brother William who by then was a butcher. Ernest was an engineer in the shipyard.
In 1912, Ernest married Alice Thompson in Hartlepool and the couple lived in Joicey Street where Alice was informed of her husband's death.
