Lost on HMS Vanguard.
Edward Egglestone was born at West Hartlepool on August 3rd, 1886, to parents Robert and Hannah Egglestone, who had married around 1880.
The 1871 census shows Robert Egglestone living with his father, also named Robert, who had been born in Stranton in 1826.
The 1891 Census shows the family living in Robinson Street West Hartlepool with a further son, 11-month old Bertie and Ann Pearson, Hannah's sister, from Scackleton.
The 1901 Census shows Robert, Hannah living at No.43, Ouston Street with their eight children; John G. (aged 21, Shipyard Machine Minder), Edward (14, Shipwright Apprentice), William (12), Hannah (9), Ethel (7), Frederick (5), Robert (3), and Ellen (2).
On January 3rd, 1910, Edward, now listed as a Shipwright, married Annie Coxon Charlton at All Saints Church, Stranton and the 1911 Census shows Edward, Annie and their 2-month old daughter Edna, living at No.20, Bentley Street, West Hartlepool.
On 9th July 1917 one of the most catastrophic accidental explosions in UK history occurred when HMS Vanguard sank following an internal explosion in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Out of 804 men, there were only two survivors and the wreck is now a Controlled Site under the Protection of Military Remains Act. The crew are commemorated at Lyness Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery on the Orkney island of Hoy.
Edward Egglestone was one of those unfortunate men who lost their lives and his body was not recovered.
Annie was still living at No.20, Bentley Street at the time of Edward's death.
