Died from disease at the Commander-in-Cheif's house, Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham.
Edward Grant was born in Camberwell, London on 14th May, 1863, and was registered at Newington, Surrey. His parents were Thomas Hugh and Eliza Ann Grant, who were married in 1893.
Edward was already in the Royal Navy at 17 years of age, the 1881 Census recording him as serving on HMS Ruby at sea. His occupation at the time was 'Boy 1st class'.
On 14th February, 1893, he married Elizabeth Mary Smailes, of Craster, at Embleton in Northumberland. In 1901, the couple were living at The Barracks, Baltic Street, in Hartlepool where Edward was Commissioner and HM Coastguard. They had three young daughters, Ruby (possibly named after his first ship?) Iris and Ella.
By 1911, the family were living at the Guardians' Office, Hart Road, West Hartlepool, where Edward is listed as Caretaker and Naval Pensioner. Listed with Edward and Elizabeth are their four daughters, Ruby (aged 14, Milliner's Apprentice), Ella (10), Lily (7), and Edna (4). Sadly Iris had died. Also listed is Elizabeth's widowed mother, Jane Smailes, aged 83.
In 1917, Edward was a Petty Officer 1st Class, at HMS Pembroke, the Royal Naval Barracks at Chatham where he was taken ill and died on 9th April, 1917. He was buried at New Cemetery, Gillingham.
At the time of Edward's loss, his family's address is given as No.86, Milton Road, West Hartlepool.
