Arthur Ernest Turner was lost on the R-class destroyer HMS Simoom when she was torpedoed.
He had been born on 28th November 1876 in Caistor Norfolk and had spent most of his life in that area, only coming to Hartlepool with his wife and family after 1911.
His parents were George William Turner, a fisherman, born in Caistor and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Emmerson, also from Caistor..
Arthur Turner married Louisa Barret at St Faith's Church in Norfolk in 1901. In 1911, they were living in Greeat Yarmouth. Arthur was a fisherman and Louisa's birthplace was given as Great Yarmouth. THey had three children Clara, 8, Arthur, 3, and Frederick 5 months. The census tells us that Louisa had given birth to two more children who had passed away.
It is unclear why, on Arthur's death, his address was given as West Hartlepool. Whether, as a fisherman, he worked on the fish quay or perhaps he came to Hartlepool and found other work. His address is given as 37 Water Street on one document and when his wife was informed of her husband's death it was given as 37 Gas Street.
