Absalom Cave was born in Scarborough around 1867. The 1871 Census not record his father's name, only his mother's, Dinah, aged 32, and three other siblings; Mary (aged 12), Alice (8), and John (1). Also in the household at this time is 11-year old Elverelda Hall.
The 1881 Census shows Absalom (aged 14), employed as a Boy on the fishing vessel Ada, of Scarborough. The Master of this vessel is listed as John Cave, though there is no indication if the two are related.
Absalom (listed as a Fisherman) and his wife Lavinia (no maiden name given), were married in 1892, and the 1911 census show them living at No.16, Bell Street, Central Estate, Hartlepool, with their eight children; Eliza (aged 17, General Domestic Servant), Alice (14, General Domestic Servant), Lavinia (13) - all born in Scarborough; John (8), Susannah (7), Ellen (5), Dinah (3), and new-born Evelyn - all born in Hartlepool.
Memorial records list Absalom as the "Husband of A. Cave, of 73, Cleveland Road, Hartlepool".
