Frederick James Desborough was born in Edworth Bedfordshire to Edward Desborough a labourer and his wife Eliza who were both from Bedfordshire. The family had been agricultural labourers. In the mid 1880s, the family moved to Hartlepool, presumably looking for wor.
In 1891, they were living in Westmoreland Street, West Hartlepool, with their three children, Frederick, Mary and Ellen all born in Edworth. Father Edward was a fireman in the steelworks. By 1901, they were in Casebourne Road, West Hartlepool. Eliza had died and there was a further child Charles aged 5 who had been born in West Hartlepool. Frederick, aged 20 was a steelworks labourer.
Frederick married Jane Maria Belsey (born in Middlesbrough), in Hartlepool in 1908. By 1911 they had two young boys, one aged 2 years and the other just 8-months and lived at 21, Dundas Street, West Hartlepool.
Frederick was lost on the steamship Claudia, of Stockton, which sank on July 30th, 1916, off Lowestoft, after striking a mine laid by the German submarine UC-1. His wife is recorded as living at 18, Thompson Street, Middlesbrough, at this time.
