Was lost while serving as 2nd Officer on the Elder Dempster steamship Mendi which was in collision with the larger Mail Steamer Darro. The Mendi was carrying more than 800 men of the South African Native Labour Corps, more than 600 of whom also lost their lives.
At an Inquest held in Portsmouth for Herbert and three other crewmen, the Coroner stated "they could not but admire the splendid way in which these men performed their duty".
