Christmas events in Hartlepool
What appears to be a Christmas party taking place in a hall c1900. Not much else known but could it have been from a workhouse. There is a man in uniform at the far end of the picture.

More detail »The mayor is possibly Mr Breward who was mayor at the time in 1957. The Christmas tree, a present from Norway because of links in the timber trade, was traditionally sited in front of Wesley Church every year. Interestingly it was lit up on 19th December whereas nowadays civic decorations are very visible at least a month before this.
