on 24/25th February, the motor vessel Orelia, the first of six vessels building for Ore Carriers Limited, carried out her sea trials. The vessel is of the single deck type with forecastle and poop and machinery aft. Her length is 407ft. and draft 25ft. 6ins. with a deadweight of about 9,000 tons. There are two holds and four hatchways. Holds have been specially designed for the carriage of iron ore. The standard of accommodation is a high one, single rooms being provided for all members of the crew and mechanical ventilation and heating is installed throughout.
Central Marine Engine Works constructed and installed the machinery which consists of two 5-cylinder Gray-Polar diesel engines, coupled to one shaft through Vulcan hydraulic clutches and reduction gearing. All auxiliaries are electrically driven, power being supplied by three 200 KW generators and one auxiliary 25 KW generator. Steam for heating purposes is supplied by two Clarkson thimble tube exhaust gas biolers and one Cochran oil-fired boiler. Speed in service is 12 knots, but over the Newbiggin Measured Mile a mean speed of 13 knots was obtained.
Vessel and machinery have been built under special survey to Lloyd's highest class and under the superintendance of the managers, Messrs. Houlder Brothers & Co. Ltd., London.
