On 17 November 1872, Joseph Banter, a seaman aboard Friendship, was presented with a silver medal of the second class & a parchment diploma by the French Government for bravery for distinguished services whilst his vessel lay at Calais on 17 November 1871.
Bound from Newport, Wales for Cork Friendship was abandoned in a sinking state between Tuscar & the Smalls on 6 October 1872. The crew were picked up by the Peter Maxwell & landed at Savannah on 27 November 1872.
