Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette, Monday, June 17^th, 1901:
WEST HARTLEPOOL STEAMER FIRE. The Central News says :—A fire, which broke out early this morning in the forepeak of the big Hartlepool steamship Goldsborough, lying in the Millwall Docks, London, caused the East End brigade a good deal trouble. The flames originated amongst a quantity of tarrry rope, cork fenders, wooden fenders, etc., forming the ship's stores. As is usual in these cases the smoke was very dense, and for some time the firemen were unable to get in touch with the flames.
Once this object was attained, however, the water, pumped by a powerful steamer, soon told on the burning mass, and, after about an hour's hard work, the fire was extinguished. The stores suffered very seriously from fire, heat, smoke, and water. The Goldsborough is capable of carrying over 3,000 tons of cargo, and owned by Messrs. Smith, Brothers, and Co., of West Hartlepool.
