Cyrena - Launch

LAUNCH AT WEST HARTLEPOOL

Yesterday, Messrs. William Gray and Co., Limited, launched the handsome steel screw steamer Cyrena, which they have built for Messrs. The Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co., Ltd., London.

She will take the highest class in Lloyd’s Register, and is of the following dimensions, viz.: Length over all, 299ft., breadth, 39ft., and depth, 22ft. 4 in.

She is designed for the carriage of case oil, and is a handsomely modelled vessel of the single deck type, with engines aft, having long poop, short bridge, and top-gallant forecastle.

Tasteful cabin accommodation will be fitted up in the poop for the captain, officers, and engineers, and the crew are berthed in upper and lower forecastle. The hull is built with deep frames, cellular double bottom, and large fore and aft peak ballast tanks, nine steam winches, steam steering gear and hand screw gear aft, patent direct steam windlass, patent vertical donkey boiler, stockless anchors, twin masts, telescopic top masts, with fore and aft rig, and all requirements for the rapid loading and discharge of cargo.  

The machinery has been made by the Central Marine Engineering Works of the builders. It is of the Triple-expansion type having cylinders 22in., 36in., and 60in. diameter, with a piston stroke of 39in., and will be placed in the after-part of the vessel. There are two large steel boilers fitted Howden’s system of forced draught, adapted to work at a pressure of 180lbs. per square inch. an evaporator and duplex feed and ballast pumps of the “C.M.E.W.” type will be fitted.

The vessel and machinery have been constructed under the superintendence of the owners’ surveyors, and the ceremony of naming the steamer Cyrena was gracefully performed by Miss Dorothy Gray, Thorp Perrow, Bedale, eldest daughter of Mr. Wm. C.  Gray, J. P., D. L.
