Stranton School in Southburn Terrace was built on land cleared when houses were demolished and it replaced the Victorian Oxford Street School. Although pupils had attended since April 26th 1971, the school was officially opened by Councillor Frank Rogers, an old boy of Oxford Street, on 26th January 1972.
On this image Mr Rogers is sitting with his wife and headteachers Miss Pattison left and Miss Salt are standing behind the children. They are Susan Morrow,6, Angela Kelly,7, and Diane Waggott,7.
