The image will have been taken in the late 1890s as the Park bound tram was then operational. As the Grand Hotel is not visible behind Wesley Church, then this must be prior to 1899-01 as it was built and opened then. It appears that the Town Hall may not have been built to the right but this is unclear.
The buildings on the left, the corner one being Hutson's Boot Shop, were replaced in 1902 by Gray Peverell department store which in 1926 became Binns and is now Wilkinsons.
The road was originally called Cambridge Road and was changed to Victoria Road around this time.

Location
The Wesley Church opened in 1872. After closing as a church in 1973, it was briefly re-opened as a nightclub in the early 2000s, but is again now unused.
