Mrs Cook, Elwick

What we know about this image :

Mrs Cook, in the basket chair, with her daughter and two servants with two cats pose outside her home in Elwick. 

Mr Bob Muncaster has kindly given us the following information on Mrs Cook:

Mrs Ellen Cook was the wife/widow of Canon Robert Cook, Rector at St Peters Elwick from 1881 to his death in1891. He had spent most of his working life at St Johns Church, Smallbridge near Rochdale and appears to have taken semi retirement at St Peters.

Ellen Cook (1824 to 1909) was still living at Elwick Hall Rectory as late as 1891 when she moved to Sutton Avenue in West Hartlepool. Mrs Cook was a talented artist and we believe she painted the 'Last Supper' altar piece at St Peters. She did paint a group of pulpit panels which we believe are still in existence although we have been unable to get the confirmed by the church.

The daughter in the image is probably Agnes Ellen (1854-1919), her older sister Louisa Sarah who was also said to be an artist  died in 1887.

Mr Muncaster has an interest in this through researching the story of St Johns as part of a local history society in the Rochale area. (Their email address is washg@mail.com)
