Edward Sample became Head of Elwick School on 9th January 1882. He retired in 1925 and died, aged 84, on 21st February 1945. During his life he ran the village library, was organist at St Peter's Church, Overseer of the Poor Law and Clerk of the Parish.
He was married to Frances Anne Sample and they had two daughters, Helen and Adeline.
Adeline, known to the family as Addie, became a school teacher and lived in the same house in Elwick Village for over 90 years.
