Edward Sample became Head of Elwick School on 9th January 1882. He retired in 1925 and died, aged 84, on 21st February 1945. During his life he ran the village library, was organist at St Peter's Church, Overseer of the Poor Law and Clerk of the Parish.
He was married to Frances Anne Sample and they had two daughters, Helen and Adeline.
Adeline, known to the family as Addie, became a school teacher and lived in the same house in Elwick Village for over 90 years.
More detail »Elwick School was opened in 1850, close to St Peter's Church.. In a Northern Daily Mail report of 1958, it was described as damp, crowded and with poor sanitary arrangements. There were just two classrooms and a small dining room which had once been a classroom.
In 1958, foundations were laid for a new school in North Lane, and this was opened for pupils in September 1959. Since that date the school has been further extended.
